4-1 Victory over UPEI for Varsity Reds

Women defeat the Panthers 4-2

The UNB Lady Reds didn't let their first game of the weekend dictate how their second game would go. They were able to take a 4-2 victory over the Panthers, and each goal was as good as the last.

"It feels awesome. We started right from the get-go really well, and coming back from yesterday it's awesome to win," said forward Brianna Ford.

Ford scored two of the four goals in today's game. Her first early in the game, and scored the second after beating the defender and the goalie had come out, giving her the opportunity to push the ball into the net.

"I tried to chip her, and then she got a piece of it and I just headed it into the net."

Head coach Jon Crossland sees Ford as one on the strongest in the league, and says it reflects each game.

"She can influence a play all over the field, like I always tell her she's the first line of defence," he said. "When she puts pressure on people she can help us win the ball, and she gets in good gaps. She can outrun anyone in the league and she's stronger than anyone in the league."

The other two goals of the game were scored by Paige Vincent and Meggie Spicer – her second of the weekend.

"Some days we just really come out on Sundays, and it's fantastic," said Spicer. "Everyone was tired from the game yesterday, and this is a really important game, we needed the three points."

Mathematically the women still have a chance to make the AUS playoffs. With the three points added to their standing, they now sit seventh in the standings, only two spots out of playoff position.

Spicer can also add Player of the Game to her goal against the Panthers.

"[I'm] really happy," she said. "I don't think I played as well as yesterday, to be honest, but I wasn't disappointed with how I played and I think it was more of a team effort. Everyone showed up 100 per cent today."

Crossland said he is happy with the results of the game, and is pleased to take the three points and looks forward to their final two regular season games.

They travel this coming weekend to play the Saint Mary's Huskies and then the Dalhousie Tigers.
