Vanderlaan leads the Varsity Reds to a 5-1 win over Mounties

The Varsity Reds finished their first game of a double-header weekend with a 5-1 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties.

 "It's nice to score goals," said head coach Jon Crossland.
 
"That was the one thing we talked about that we needed to do and it was good to see them go in."
 
Eden Vanderlaan was named Player of the Game, having scored two of the five goals for the women.

"Her game has come a long way in a year, and I thought today was kind of a glimpse of what it could be," said Crossland.

"The first goal she just out-muscled a girl and out-willed her to the ball, and in the second one she opened up and she hit a shot. Those are all things she's capable of doing and we just need her to make sure she keeps doing that."

 The Hanwell native is in her third year of eligibility and plays in the mid-field position.

In today's game against Mount Allison, Vanderlaan was able to take a goal in each half against the Mounties, and the women took their first victory of the regular season.

 "It feels awesome. Today we finished our chances and that was the difference," says Vanderlaan.
 
"We've been working on finishing all week, so it's about time."

 As a kid Vanderlaan asked her parents if she could start playing soccer. After going out on her own she developed a passion for it and stuck with the sport.

Both her parents going to the University of New Brunswick helped her in her decision to come to UNB, and three years later she is still with the Reds.

 She looks forward to another season on the team.

"I think it's gonna be good," she says.

"This is just the start."
