FREDERICTON - The men's and women's soccer teams concluded their exhibition play today on a positive note as the women's team tied the UQTR Patriots 4-4 while the men's team defeated Sherbrooke 2-0.
The UNB women opened their exhibition play on the road on Wednesday against University of Maine Fort Kent where they we're defeated 5-2 by the 2011 USCAA national champions.
On the weekend they hosted UPEI, McGill and UPEI for a series of games at home at the BMO Centre. UNB lost their first game 7-0 to McGill who finished 4th at the 2011 CIS championship. The Varsity Reds had two goals apiece from Sam Legacy and Kyla Painter In their second game of the weekend against UQTR. In the other games at the BMO Centre UPEI downed UQTR 2-0 while McGill and UPEI tied with one goal apiece in the final game of the day.
Head coach Jon. Crossland was pleased that his team had the opportunity to experience pre- season competition. "It's always good to get the team into competition before the season begins. It gives us (the coaching staff) a chance to see the ladies in game situations and helps us prepare for AUS competition," said Crossland
The Varsity Reds men's team travelled to Sherbrooke to do just that as well as they opened on Friday with a 4-0 loss to McGill followed with a 2-0 win on Saturday over Ottawa. In their final game of the weekend they posted a 2-0 win over Sherbrooke.
UNB opens AUS play on Friday, September 7th as the UNB teams take on the Mount Allison Mounties at the BMO Centre - the women kick off at 5:00 pm while the men have a 7:15 pm start.
