Women's soccer split final weekend at home
October 16, 2011
Saturday afternoon saw an amazing display of talent by the Varsity Reds women’s soccer program as they owned the field and de-clawed the UPEI Panthers with a 2-1 victory.
Both goals by the Varsity Reds, including a beautiful cross and finish with a header by Brianna Ford, demonstrated the workings of the team as they continued to control the play and bring the ball up the field.
“I think we attacked much better as a unit and we created better quality chances in the offensive third of the field,” said UNB head coach, Andy Cameron.
The same can be said of Jackie Blank’s meticulous and accurate goaltending as she shutout UPEI.
“The second goal that we scored was outstanding with a good build up and you know, it was a great result for the team. We’ll take that and go forward,” said Cameron.
However, after Saturday’s amazing performance on the field, the Varsity Reds couldn’t get their footing as they lost 7-0 against CBU.
“We played yesterday, got a great result against the fourth best team in the country. We left it on the field and then to come back today and play another very good team. They’re lower in the rankings, they’re lower in the standings than they deserve to be, they’re a very good team. They’re defending champions and they showed it today,” said Cameron.
“We’ll learn from the mistakes we made today.”
Next week the V-Reds will be on the road, where they will take on StFX and UdeM.
