UNB soccer squads chasing playoff spots
Both University of New Brunswick soccer squads are hoping to secure Atlantic University Sport playoff spots this weekend.
On the women's side, 9-0-3 UPEI, 9-0-2 Dalhousie and 6-3-2 Cape Breton have secured three of six playoff spots for the AUS women's championship Nov. 5-7 in Acadia.
The host Axewomen, despite sitting ninth in the 10-team conference, get an automatic berth.
That leaves five teams fighting for the remaining two spots.
St. FX (4-5-2) and UNB (4-6-2) are tied for fourth with 14 points apiece.
Saint Mary's is sixth with a 3-4-4 record for 13 points, followed by Universite de Moncton at 3-5-3 for 12 and Mount Allison at 2-4-5 for 11 points.
Six games could have a major impact on the standings.
The Varsity Reds host the first-place Panthers at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chapman Field. The X-Women host Acadia and play the Huskies in Saint Mary's.
Mount Allison also travels to Halifax to play SMU, then returns home to face UdeM. Moncton plays at Cape Breton on Saturday.
On the men's side, 10-0-1 St. FX and 7-2-2 Saint Mary's have locked up two spots. The Universite de Moncton, as AUS men's championship host, will be a third entry.
Five teams are still in the hunt for the other three spots.
Dalhousie is third with a 5-3-3 record for 18 points, one more than 5-4-2 Memorial and 5-5-2 UNB.
Cape Breton and Moncton both have 4-4-3 records for 15 points.
UPEI, 4-7-1 for 13 points, has an outside chance to get in. The Panthers will have to beat the V-Reds at 3:15 p.m. Saturday and hope Cape Breton loses to both Moncton and ninth-place Acadia. Both games are in Sydney.
Dal and Memorial square off Saturday and Sunday in St. John's.
Moncton plays last-place Mount A in Sackville on Sunday.
