(FREDERICTON, NB) The Atlantic University Sport champion UNB REDS have drawn the No. 4 seed for the 2023 U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship and will face the hosts and No. 5 seed Université de Montreal Carabins in the quarter-finals.

UNB and Montreal will play the second game of the tournament, at 8:30pm Atlantic, on Thursday.

The games will be played at Montreal’s CEPSUM Arena.

“We’re excited to get to Montreal and experience everything that the Carabins have in store,” said REDS’ head coach Sarah Hilworth. “We played Montreal in pre-season this year and had a very competitive game against them.”

OUA champs University of Toronto are the tournament’s number one seed, with Canada West champs UBC and RSEQ champs Concordia rounding out the top four.

Nipissing, STFX and Mount Royal are seeds six, seven and eight.

“We know, once we get to the national championship tournament, that every team we play will be talented, hard-working, and want to win as bad as the next team,” said Coach Hilworth. “I think there will be an extra sense of excitement playing the host team in our first game.”

This will be the second appearance in the national championship tournament for UNB, having made their tournament debut in 2022, in Charlottetown.

Tickets for the event are on sale now, via the U SPORTS website.

All eight games of the tournament will be webcast live on CBC Sports digital platforms (English) and USPORTS.ca (French). The full webcast schedule will be available throughout the tournament at https://usports.ca/en/broadcast
