REDS Edge Huskies
(HALIFAX, NS) Kendra Woodland (Kamloops, BC) stopped 41 shots as the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked UNB REDS beat the Saint Mary's Huskies 1-0, in Halifax, on Saturday afternoon.
The visiting REDS got an early chance on the powerplay, just over three minutes in, but the Huskies were able to hold.
What would be a battle of goaltenders began to emerge as Huskies' rookie Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB) stopping everything the REDS threw at her. At the other end of the ice, Woodland continued to stymie the Huskies as the home team upped the pressure. The Huskies outshot the REDS 14-7 in the first period.
Just past the four-minute mark of the second, the Huskies powerplay went to a 5-on-3 advantage, but the REDS limited Saint Mary's chances to one.
The REDS jumped on a chance later in the period with Melanie Drost (Nepean, ON) coming in on a breakaway, but Hansen was there with a glove save to keep the game 0-0.
The first half of the third period saw both teams come out strong, with the Huskies jumping on every opportunity they could. However, Woodland was always there to make the stop.
With 8: 52 left in the period, in a flurry of activity in front of the Saint Mary's net, Mackenzie Keenan (Midhurst, ON) netted her first goal of the season, putting the REDS up 1-0.
The Huskies pressed for the equalizer, but Woodland continued her outstanding play in goal, leading the REDS to the 1-0 victory.
Woodland, by way of her 41 saves, was named Subway Player of the Game.
Hansen stopped 19 shots.
The loss brought an end to Saint Mary's four-game win streak and dropped their record to 7-5-0-0 on the season.
The win extends UNB's win streak to an even dozen, pushing their record to 13-0-0-1.
The REDS return home to host UPEI on Wednesday. Game time is 7:00pm.
The Huskies visit their Halifax rival Dalhousie on Friday, in a 7:00pm start.
