(FREDERICTON, NB) Lily George (Garden Village, ON) scored both goals, including the game winner in overtime, as the UNB Reds defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
George was named the Subway Player of the Game for the Reds.
"I just happened to be in the right spot, jumped on it and saw an opening," said George.
UNB improves to 5-3-0 with the win.
The Mounties fall to 1-6-1 with the loss.
The game had a quiet start with the teams combining for just six shots at the midway point of the first.
George would bring the game alive at 12:22 of the first period, taking a pass from Tamina Kehler (Chilliwack, BC) down low, skating out of the corner and firing a shot over the shoulder of Mounties goaltender Bianca Zak (Stonewall, MB) to make it 1-0 Reds.
UNB would come out strong in the second, pressuring the Mounties with speed and a strong forecheck, outshooting them 7-3.
UNB was unable to pad their lead, but some key penalty kills and solid goaltending from Hailey Martens (Ladysmith, BC) maintained their advantage heading into the third.
Despite some late pressure from the Mounties, UNB seemed to be hanging on in the final minute of the third.
However, Rhiannon Ford (Oakville, ON) found an opening and put the puck past Martens with 15.2 seconds left to force the overtime.
"The shot honestly was nothing special. [I was] just getting it to the net in the last few seconds and I'm just happy that it decided to go in," said Ford.
In overtime, George drove to the net and corralled another pass from Kehler in the slot to put home the winner with 1:27 left in the extra frame.
"For her, I think it's a monkey off her back. She hadn't been on the scoreboard for a couple games so I think it's a relief for her for sure," said Reds head coach Sarah Hilworth.
Martens made 15 saves to pick up the win for the Reds
Zak had 20 saves in the Mounties net.
The Reds are back home next Friday when the host l'Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues at the Aitken Centre at 7:00pm.
The Mounties are on the road to face the UPEI Panthers next Saturday.
