REDS On To AUS Semis
(MONTAGUE, PE) The UNB REDS women's and men's curling teams have advanced to the semi-finals at the AUS Curling Championships, at the Montague Curling Club, in Montague, Prince Edward Island.
The UNB women split a pair of games on Saturday, the final day of round robin play, beating STFX 8-2 in a morning draw before dropping a 9-3 decision to Mount Allison in the evening draw.
"Despite our loss tonight, we moved into the semi-finals," said REDS' head coach Wayne Tallon. "That's one of the goals this team had set before the weekend began, so we're happy."
The men played only once on Saturday, losing 8-2 to the host UPEI Panthers.
The women finish the round robin with a 4-and-2 record, tied for second, and will face Mount Allison in one of two semi-finals on Sunday. The Mounties finished with the same 4-and-2 record.
Dalhousie faces Saint Mary's in the other women's semi-final.
The REDS men's team finished their round robin with a 2-and-2 record and will face the 3-and-1 Saint Mary's Huskies in the semi-finals.
Dal and STFX meet in the other men's semi-final.
All four semi-final games begin at 9:00am Sunday.
"We look forward to a strong showing in the semi-final and, hopefully, a berth in the final," said Coach Tallon. "The team is playing very well and are prepared for a good day on Sunday."
The semi-final winners advance to the championship games while the losers move into bronze medal contests.
The medal games are scheduled for 1:00pm.
