McCready To Add To Family Legacy As A RED
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s basketball team is adding 5’7” guard Megan McCready to their recruiting class of 2025.
The 17-year-old, from Quispamsis, is completing her Grade 12 year at Kennebecasis Valley High School, where she’s been one of the most productive members of the Blue Knights’ girls’ team in school history.
“Meg is an extremely hard working and committed athlete who has shown she’s invested in doing what it takes to win,” said REDS’ head coach Erin McAleenan. “We know that Meg will be a great addition to our strong team culture and look forward to having her be a part of our REDS family.”
In her first three seasons of high school basketball, McCready scored more than 1000 points for KVHS.
She helped lead the Blue Knights to the tournament title at the recent Rick Cotter Classic at Fredericton High School, earning tournament all-star status in the process.
Last season, she earned tournament MVP honours at the St. Malachy’s and Rothesay High tourneys, and she’s been part of Basketball New Brunswick teams the past three summers, representing the province at two national championship tournaments.
“I’m always working on and improving my game,” said McCready. “I play with a lot of speed and power, and I think that fits with the style of play at UNB. I like the fast break, can handle the ball with pressure, and can shoot the ball well from the perimeter.”
“We’ve been impressed with Meg’s motor and ability to score the basketball,” said Coach McAleenan. “Meg is a very skilled guard who is a consistent threat from beyond the arc and can create her own shot.”
McCready, who’s signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport season, comes by her talent naturally.
Her mother, Kara Palmer, was a standout with the UNB women’s basketball team during the late 80s and early 90s.
Palmer helped UNB to three Atlantic conference titles, earned AUS Rookie of the Year and MVP honours, was a five-time AUS all-star, a 1st Team All-Canadian, and was twice named UNB’s female athlete of the year.
“It’s big shoes to fill, for sure,” said McCready. “But it’s something that will help push me to be better, so I’m grateful for that.”
“I want to contribute from day one,” she added. “I bring a lot of intensity and work ethic to practice and games. I believe in the coaches and the program, so we will win AUS Championships. My mom won three championships here. I’d like to do the same.”
McCready will study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
