REDS Down Rouge et Or
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS picked up Saturday where they left off on Friday.
The REDS employed a solid mix of offence and defence to beat the Laval Rouge et Or 87-52 in the second game for both teams at UNB's Stewart-McKelvey Helen Campbell Tournament.
"Today was great," said REDS' forward Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON). "We did a lot of good things. We just kept pushing."
Butts, named Player of the Game, scored 19 points. She also grabbed five rebounds.
"Our goal today was to not only play good offence but to also play great defence," said Butts. "One of the focuses for us was getting boards, getting rebounds, boxing out and getting those 50-50 balls, doing the little things."
The REDS went right to work offensively, building a 14-2 lead before the mid-way point of the opening quarter.
An Addie Mombourquette basket 4:41 in prompted an early Laval timeout, but that did little to slow down the home team.
UNB led 23-9 after 10 minutes.
The Rouge et Or couldn't slow the REDS in the second quarter and UNB took a 41-22 lead to the half-time break.
During the break, fourth-year REDS wing Erin Ingalls (St. George, NB) was presented with the LCol Erin Savage Memorial Scholarship, one of the program's most prestigious awards.
The REDS continued to score in the third quarter before erupting for 23 points in the final quarter to win going away.
"It's good to start our season on such a high and this is our court, this is our tournament to win," said Butts. "It's our house."
Kylee Speedy came off the UNB bench to add 18 points, including 4-for-7 shooting from three point range, while Ingalls and Jayda Veinot (Port Williams, NS) each scored 11.
Frédérique Beaudry-Blais (Quebec, QC) scored a team-high 19 points for Laval, while Élodie Lajoie (Amos, QC) came off the bench to add nine.
In the second game of the evening, the Saint Mary's Huskies scored a 66-54 win over the Nipissing Lakers.
Lucy Beaumont (Fredericton, NB) led the Huskies with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) dropped 10 points.
Megan Mccarter (Wallaceburg, ON) posted a double-double for the Lakers, scoring 14 and grabbing 12 rebounds. Brianna Dodd (Timmins, ON) came off the Nipissing bench to score 11 points.
With their Saturday wins, the REDS and Huskies are both 2-and-0.
They'll meet for the coveted Helen Campbell Tournament title on Sunday. That game tips off at 12:00pm.
Nipissing and Laval, both 0-2, get started early. They tip off at 10:00am (Atlantic).
The REDS, winners of the 2022 Campbell Tourney title, will be looking to go back-to-back. That's something UNB hasn't done since 2002 and 2003.
