(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds women’s basketball team is adding more shooting depth to their recruiting class of 2020.

McKinley Bezanson, of Hantsport, Nova Scotia, a shooting guard from Wolfville’s Horton High School, has signed the U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join the Reds ahead of the 2020-21 Atlantic University Sport season.

“This is a huge win for our program,” said Reds head coach Jeff Speedy. “McKinley is one of the top players in Nova Scotia, and we’re really excited she chose to leave the province to join us at UNB.”

Bezanson was a starter on the Nova Scotia team that played in the 2018 U17 national championship, held at the Currie Center.

“I wanted to be a part of more than just a basketball team, I wanted to join a family,” said Bezanson. “While on my visit at UNB, I realized very quickly that that is exactly what the team here is. Both the campus and the basketball program fit what I am looking for.”

“Early in the fall we made the decision as a coaching staff that we were going to focus on recruiting players who are considered scorers and who can really shoot the ball. And that certainly describes McKinley,” said Speedy.

“I want to develop, on and off the court,” said Bezanson. “And, of course, win an AUS Championship.”

Bezanson will study science while attending UNB, and hopes to pursue a career in the medical forensics field.
