UNB Back Into Win Column
Down X 68-46, end five game slide
(ANTIGONISH, NS) The UNB Varsity Reds broke a five-game losing streak by beating the St FX X-Women 68-46, on Saturday evening. The win was worth four points in the Atlantic University Sport standings for the Varsity Reds.
The V-Reds were powered by a 21-point effort from Subway Player of the Game Nicole Esson(Fredericton, NB).
The visitors got out to an early 9-0 start, and built a 20-15 lead in the opening quarter.
The second quarter saw the Varsity Reds outscore the X-Women 16-9 with Esson scoring nine of those points, extending their lead to 36-24 at half-time.
The X-Women came back in the third quarter, and play was a lot closer.
St FX's Caroline Hrabinski(Toronto, ON) scored five of her 12 points on the night in the third frame, while Grace Simpson(Fredericton, NB) netted eight for the V-Reds, including four from the free throw line.
UNB was up 53-37 after 30 minutes. They held the X-Women to only nine points in the fourth quarter, on their way to the win.
Along with her game-high 21 points, Esson pulled in six rebounds for the Varsity Reds. Simpson finished with 13 points on the night, and lead UNB with eight rebounds. Eva Tumwine(Fredericton, NB) netted 10 points.
The X-Women host the Saint Mary's Huskies on Tuesday evening, in a 6:00pm tip-off.
UNB will be at home on Friday, February 16th to host UPEI, also at 6:00pm.
