Tigers Rally Past V-Reds
Dal scores 59-57 come-from-behind win
(HALIFAX, NS) The Dalhousie Tigers scored a come-from-behind 59-57 win over the visiting UNB Varsity Reds, Saturday in Halifax.
Early defensive pressure led to transition offence for UNB, and Krystal Osburn(Nottawa, ON) doing work on the glass and feeding the ball to Laura Kaye(Fredericton, NB) for fast break points.
The Tigers could only muster eight points in the quarter, and headed to the second trailing 16-8.
After an early Tigers run to start the second, the Varsity Reds responded with a run of their own and UNB took a 29-26 lead into the halftime break.
The second half started fast and furious, both sides trading baskets.
Nicole Esson(Fredericton, NB) scored 13 of UNB's 26 third quarter points, including three three point shots.
The Varsity Reds led 55-44 after three quarters.
The Tigers put together an impressive string of defensive stops in the fourth, shutting out the Varsity Reds through the first six minutes of the quarter. This allowed the Tigers to slowly chip away at the deficit.
Sparked by rebounding on both ends, the Tigers were able to bring the game within one point.
It took nine minutes for UNB to find their first basket, coming on an offensive rebound for Osburn.
Down by two, the Varsity Reds had the last possession, but a lay-up was no good and the Tigers completed the comeback and won 59-57.
With the loss, UNB falls to 6-7, good for sixth place in the Atlantic University Sport standings, while Dal is seventh with a 4-8 record.
The Tigers are back on the court Tuesday, travelling to St FX.
The Varsity Reds will take on Saint Mary's in back to back games, at the Richard J. Currie Center, Friday and Saturday.
