V-Reds Off To 2 & 0 Start
Down CBU 78-66
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds are 2-and-0 to start the Atlantic University Sport season after a 78-66 win over the Cape Breton University Capers Saturday afternoon, at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The Capers are now 0-and-2.
Laura Kaye(Fredericton, NB) led the Varsity Reds with 22 points, while Hannah Currie(Collingwood, ON) had 10 rebounds.
Reigning AUS MVP Alison Keough(Marion Bridge, NS) led the CBU effort recording a double-double. She scored 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
"I think our shots were falling, and that really helped us pull away in the second half," said Kaye. "We started bringing the energy in the second half, which is sometimes where we start to lose it, so it was good."
Midway through the second quarter, the Capers did take a 26-25 lead on a three point basket by Timea Peter(Oradea, ROM). It was their first lead of the weekend.
CBU extended the lead to 28-25 before UNB went on a 7-0 run to go in front 32-28.
The Varsity Reds never looked back, leading 35-31 at the half and 56-44 after three quarters.
"We're a work in progress, because we have a lot of young guards and you can't replace experience," said Capers head coach Fabian McKenzie. "Speedy's got those experienced guards and bigs and they can do some things, but we're a work in progress and I'm happy with some of the things we did today."
"Now we've got to go back to the drawing board and try and fix it for next week," he said.
The Varsity Reds are happy with their winning weekend.
"It's a good start for all of our seniors," said Kaye. "To show the rest of the AUS what we can do and to show that we're going to be a team to beat this year."
The V-Reds hit the road next weekend for a pair of games at UPEI.
The Capers return home to host the Saint Mary's Huskies.
