Kaye Drops 22 In UNB Win
Varsity Reds down Laurentian 82-44
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds weren't about to let it happen two nights in a row.
The Varsity Reds, in their second game at their own Helen Campbell Tournament, handed the Laurentian Voyageurs an 82-44 loss.
The UNB win came 24 hours after a stinging 81-47 loss to Laval.
Laura Kaye(Fredericton, NB) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Varsity Reds.
Nicole Esson(Fredericton, NB) came off the UNB bench to score 14, while Grace Simpson(Fredericton, NB) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Kayla Deschetelets(Timmins, ON) the Voyageurs with 12 points, while Emily Tinnes(Newmarket, ON) and Mackenzie Robinson(Collingwood, ON) added 10 each.
"It felt really good," said Esson, of the pre-season tournament win. "I think that game, we played more as a team and we stuck to the game plan. We got a lot of rebounds and our defence was better."
"We got better looks on offence and the whole team played well collectively," said Esson.
The Varsity Reds wrap up their Campbell Tournament on Sunday when they face Atlantic University Sport rival Acadia in a scheduled 2:00pm start.
The Axewomen are 2-0 in the tournament, after wins over Laurentian and Laval.
"A win definitely ups the confidence, for sure," said Esson. "It gives us the confidence we need going into tomorrow's game, and then into the season."
The Voyageurs finish their tournament run when they face Laval. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:00am(Atl.) on Sunday.
