VReds Improve to 11-4
52-46 win at UPEI
(CHARLOTTETOWN, PE) Laura Kaye(Fredericton, NB) and Mikaela Dodig(Bolton, ON) each had 17 points to lead the UNB Varsity Reds in a 52-46 win over the UPEI Panthers on Friday.
The Varsity Reds improved to 11-4 with the road win while the Panthers' record falls to 6-8.
Things did not go well for the Varsity Reds early on.
They scored just six first quarter points, trailing 15-6 after the first ten minutes and 30-18 at the half.
UNB exploded for 19 points in the third quarter, and limited the Panthers to just five in the fourth quarter to escape with the win.
Kaye was 7 of 10 from the field, including 2 for 3 from three-point range.
Dodig hit 3 of her 4 three-point shots. The freshman guard added six rebounds to her career-high scoring night, and was named the Subway Player of the Game.
Katelyn Mangold(Peterborough, ON) had a game-high ten rebounds for the Varsity Reds.
Jenna Mae Ellsworth(Charlottetown, PE) scored 14 to lead the home side, while Kiera Rigby(Charlottetown, PE) added 12 points.
The Panthers played with just eight players, and got all but two of their points from their five starters.
UNB didn't lead in this game until the 2:20 mark of the fourth quarter, and then never relinquished the lead.
The Varsity Reds and Panthers face each other again, Saturday at 6:00pm, at UPEI.
