VReds Rebound With Win At X

(ANTIGONISH, NS) The UNB Varsity Reds defeated the St. FX X-Women 70-48 in Atlantic University Sport basketball action, Saturday evening.

With the help of four points from Katelyn Mangold(Peterborough, ON), the visitors jumped to an 8-2 edge after the opening two minutes.

After a three-point shot from X guard Holly Scott(Antigonish, NS), the home side trailed 14-7.

The Varsity Reds led 20-10 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, UNB added to their advantage. Laura Kaye(Fredericton, NB) made it 33-17 midway through the stanza. On the strength of a 10-2 run before halftime, the Varsity Reds were up 38-19 heading to the locker room.

In a low-scoring third quarter, the X-Women held a 16-9 scoring edge, with Kendra Smith(North Preston, NS) keying the spurt with four points and two blocked shots.

Heading to the fourth quarter, UNB led 47-35.

In the final 10 minutes, after back-to-back three-pointers from freshman guard Jessica Miller(Mount Denson, NS), the X-Women only trailed 50-43.

The Varsity Reds replied, with Mangold scoring consecutive hoops to help them extend to a 54-43 lead by the midway point of the fourth quarter. The X-Women got no closer, with UNB finishing the contest on a 20-5 run.

Subway Player of the Game Hannah Currie(Collingwood, ON) led all scorers, with 17 points, while chipping in three rebounds, and four assists.

Kaye and Mangold also scored in double digits, with 12 apiece, while adding two and four blocked shots, respectively. Nicole LaFleur(Fredericton, NB) corralled a game-high seven rebounds for the Varsity Reds.

For St. FX, Miller led with 12 points, while adding four rebounds and two assists. Chelsea Provo(East Preston, NS) contributed nine points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a losing cause.

The X-Women will be back on the court Tuesday, when they welcome Cape Breton.

The Varsity Reds return to action Saturday, when they host the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Fredericton. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00PM
