(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The UNB Varsity Reds opened their season on a winning note, defeating the Memorial Sea-Hawks 65-52, on Saturday, in St. John's.
The Varsity Reds secured the victory behind a balanced scoring attack, with three players registering double digits. Hannah Currie(Collingwood, ON) and Grace Wade(Moncton, NB) had 14 points each, while Nicole LaFleur(Fredericton, NB) chipped in with 13.
Currie got out to a quick start, dropping 8 points in the first quarter. That helped UNB establish a 32-26 halftime advantage.
Memorial would fight back throughout the second half, narrowing the Varsity Reds lead to single digits on multiple occasions.
Sydney Stewart(Sarnia, ON) was high scorer for the Sea-Hawks, finishing with 18 points.
The Sea-Hawks and VReds were well matched in multiple categories, as both forced 27 turnovers, with UNB outscoring the Sea-Hawks 22-20 on points off turnovers.
Both teams are back in action on Sunday, in a 11:30AM(Atlantic) tip-off.
