Varsity Reds Land Blue Chip Prospect
(FREDERICTON, NB) In basketball recruiting circles, Mikaela Dodig is seen as blue chip prospect… and the star point guard will showcase her talents with the UNB Varsity Reds, beginning next season.
“Mikaela was the recruit we really targeted and wanted,” says Varsity Reds head coach Jeff Speedy. “Our team just got a whole lot better, and our program just took a major step forward.”
Dodig was the starting point guard for Team Ontario at the U17 national championship tournament, in Edmonton, last summer. She was named a tournament all-star, as Ontario went undefeated on route to the gold medal.
The Bolton, Ontario, native was a standout with the Bill Crothers Secondary School Colts and played in Ontario’s Junior Elite League(JUEL) for the North Toronto Huskies. With the Huskies, Dodig was the second leading scorer and led the team in assists and steals.
Dodig chose UNB over a number of other CIS schools and is confident in her choice.
“I think winning an AUS championship in my first year is very realistic,” says Dodig. “I want to help the team get to nationals every year and be the first AUS women's basketball team to win a national championship.”
Dodig plans on studying Kinesiology.
“I decided to continue my basketball career at UNB because it's the place where I’m going to get pushed to be better everyday,” she says. “UNB was the best fit for me academically, athletically and socially.”
Coach Speedy is excited she’s becoming a Varsity Red. “I’m really looking forward to how she will make every player on our team a little better. I am also looking forward to challenging Mikaela to improve every day. She is a winner, she wants to win and she is expecting to win here at UNB.”
Mikaela Dodig will join the Varsity Reds beginning in the 2016-2017 season.
