2016 Breakfast For Success Approaching
(FREDERICTON, NB) The season may have come to an end, but the work continues.
The Friends of the Varsity Reds Women’s Basketball Team will host the tenth annual ‘Breakfast For Success’ and auction on April 7th.
The event celebrates women’s basketball and raises funds for the Varsity Reds Women’s Basketball Scholarship Program.
“Along with raising money, it also allows us to celebrate our season along with the seasons of all of the minor teams that attend,” says Varsity Reds head coach Jeff Speedy. “It’s also a way for us to introduce our incredible student-athletes and interact with the basketball community. We hope by having some graduating players speak, it inspires some of the young players in attendance to want to be in the exact same spot in the future.”
Two graduating members of this year’s team will speak at the 2016 ‘Breakfast For Success.’
During the first nine years of the event, more than $112,000 has been raised to support scholarships. That allows the program to attract elite athletes from across Canada and keep New Brunswick athletes at UNB.
The event does not work without gracious community support. Individual tickets can be purchased for $40.00 each. Tables of eight are available for $300.00.
The silent auction component of the event is always popular and, in the past, has featured trips, BBQs and gift certificates from Fredericton-area restaurants and hotels.
Those who can’t make it to the breakfast and auction, but still want to support the program and the event can help send local middle and high school girls’ basketball teams.
Coach Speedy says he’s thankful for the support the breakfast brings, but he says his favourite moments involve the girls. “Either hearing one of our graduating student-athletes speak, or looking out and seeing 10 or 12 girls basketball teams sitting their supporting the VReds.”
The 2016 ‘Breakfast For Success’ will be held April 7th, 7AM-8AM, at the Fredericton Inn.
