(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The UNB Varsity Reds defeated the Memorial Seahawks 85-80 on Saturday night, in AUS women's basketball action.

The first half was a tale of different quarters as Memorial jumped out to a 22‐19 first quarter lead, while UNB responded with a 24‐14second quarter to take a 43‐36 into the break.

The third quarter saw both teams battle to a 19‐19 draw, which led to a very competitive finish. Teams traded baskets for the majority of the quarter with UNB leading by 3 points with 30 seconds to play.

UNB controlled the ball and Memorial was forced to foul to try and extend the game. Sydney Ezekiel was called for an unsportsmanlike foul, which gave UNB 2 shots and the ball. Rachel Cleary knocked down both shots to extend the Varsity Reds lead to 5 points.

Those 2 free throws turned out to be the last scores of the game as UNB won 85-80.

Memorial's leading scorer was Ezekiel, who poured in 32 points to go along with 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Sydney Stewart dropped in 13 points and

The Varsity Reds got contributions up and down the line-up, with four players putting up double figures. Laura Kaye had 17 points. Cleary scored 15, Grace Wade added 14 and Nicole LaFleur had 10.

Cleary also put up 9 rebounds for the Varsity Reds.

The teams meet again today.
