V-Reds upset CBU 57-40
The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds defeated the visiting Cape Breton University Capers, by a final score of 57-40.
Leading scorers for the Varsity Reds were: Awo Farah with 12 points and 5 rebounds, and Rachel Cleary with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
The Varsity Reds took the initial 8-0 lead, with strong individual efforts from Tilly Ettinger and Cleary. Farah and Grace Wade each added their respective baskets to extend UNB's lead: 12-0. As the quarter came to a close Farah added a final basket and the V-Reds were ahead 14-2.
Cape Breton clawed back in the second quarter scoring six unanswered points, including a distant three from Tanira McClurkin to stay alive, 14-8. UNB's Kaitlyn Mangold brought down back-to-back offensive boards, enabling the V-Reds shooters to drain some long distance markers, extending the lead to 28-14.
The second half opened with UNB continuing to dominate, with Mangold netting a couple of baskets to further the lead 34-20. Farrah added two more baskets for the V-Reds to take the commanding lead; 43-26.
The Varsity Reds maintained their 20-point lead with a three-point and-one play by Ettinger, sitting comfortable 50-30. Laura Kaye continually drove hard to the net, created opportunities for the V-Reds as well as scoring a pair of her own, ensuring the victory, 57-40.
The V-Reds dominated the game in every aspect, Coach Jeff Speedy was thrilled with his team's performance against the AUS second place team, saying. "We did a great job challenging shots, we didn't give them too many open looks on the perimeter. If you limit the other team's players to performing below their average, it opens up the game, and I think we did that well tonight."
The next action for UNB will take place tomorrow (Feb. 22) at 6:00 in the Richard J. Currie Center. The V-Reds will be taking on the visiting St. FX X-Women in the final game of the 2013-14 regular season.
