Overtime win for V-Reds over Panthers - 72-66
In AUS regular season play, the UNB Varsity Reds defeated the visiting UPEI Panthers in overtime 72-66.
The game got underway with a quick end-to-end pace as both teams built an even 7-7 score. UNB's Katelyn Mangold brought down four boards in the opening frame, allowing guard Awo Farrah to drive to the net producing a 12-8 lead. UPEI tied it up at 12-12, on two successful free throws by Jane McLaughlin.
The second quarter saw UNB fall behind after a three point play from PEI's Julie Hatcher making the score: 21-16. Tilly Ettinger fought back for the V-Reds with a three of her own, narrowing the deficit to 25-21. UPEI winning the battles under the net and Glendeira Smith capitalized and added a basket to add to the lead, 27-21. Ettinger added another jump shot at the end of the quarter to finish the half behind 29-25.
In the third quarter UNB levelled the score quickly: 29-29 with back-to-back jump shots from Rachel Cleary. Colleen Daley helped push the Varsity Reds ahead, 32-29. PEI's Jones answered back with a long distance jump shot of her own to cut the UNB lead to 34-31. Fredericton native, Laura Kaye kept the Panthers at bay, with a long distance jump shot to maintain a 38-35 lead. The UPEI Panthers capitalized on some momentary foul trouble from UNB, to pull up to a close 42-39, at the end of the quarter.
The overtime period got off with UPEI getting into some foul trouble which allowed UNB to pull ahead 64-62. The lead did not last long as the Panthers pulled ahead on free-throws of their own 66-65. It was not until the 57 second mark that UNB's Farrah broke the stand-off and sunk a huge basket, getting the V-Reds out front 68-66. UNB never let up and finished the match victorious 72-66.
The Varsity Reds are in action next on Friday November 22nd, against Acadia in on the road in Wolfville, tip off at 6:00pm.
