V-Reds defeat Capers

On Friday night the V-Reds women’s team faced the CBU Capers at the RJCC and a battle that ended in over- time.
The first quarter was a battle of defence. With possession flipping back and forth, the V-Reds kept the Capers at bay, the first points of the game for UNB with 7:13 Claire Colbourne tied the game at 2-2.
With defensive rebounds for Melissa Foster, Claire Colbourne and Colleen Daly UNB scored six in a row, from the paint. Offensive rebounds from Melissa Foster, Tilly Ettinger, and Rachel Cleary, lead to four points scored from second chances in the first quarter. Closing out the quarter, Claire Colbourne sinks the three, ending the quarter with V-Reds leading 13-10.
Starting off the second quarter Colleen Daly sinks a three with only twenty four seconds off the clock, setting the tone for the V-Reds. Staying strong defensively, Claire Colbourne, Rachel Cleary, Colleen Daly, and Samantha Kaminsky take in defensive rebounds, allowing for four points earned from fast breaks. Only allowing the Capers the lead once, offensive rebounds earned UNB three points. CBU, striking back with a three-pointer, ended the quarter with the lead, 24-23.
Coach speedy stated, “This is the tightest we’ve played defensively, since our tournament in Toronto” reflecting this comment, the V-Reds had a total of 29 defensive rebounds, leaving CBU with only 10 offensive rebounds, also strong offensively UNB pulled down 16 rebounds, leading to a total of 13 second chance points.
Tilley Ettinger, UNB’s player of the game earned a total of seven points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals, the third quarter, ended 43-35, for the V-Reds.
Both teams battling ferociously, UNB scored a total of 10 points in the 4th, CBU with a total of 14. Tied at 51 at the end of the fourth, the game would be decided in Overtime.
With both teams tired, focus was critical in overtime. CBU pulled ahead, with 3:26 left in overtime, however, clearly wanting the win, UNB stepped up their game, with defensive rebounds from Melissa Foster, Tilly Ettinger, and Claire Colbourne leading to the points in the paint from Claire Colbourne, and Rachel Cleary and ending the overtime period, Claire Colbourne sinks the three, leaving the V-Reds with their first win at home, with the score 62-58.
