"Think Pink" continues at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds will continue their Think Pink campaign, a part of the national Shoot for the Cure drive, this weekend at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER.

Fresh off another successful Pink in the Rink night, where over $1700 was raised in the fight against breast cancer, the basketball and volleyball programs are stepping up to keep the flow of donations coming in.

"The Shoot for the Cure weekend is something I personally and I know the team looks forward to every year,” said Jeff Speedy, women’s basketball head coach and Shoot for the Cure chair.

“It always feels great to give back or do something for others. I love how the student athletes here at UNB have really embraced this weekend on the calendar and work very hard to make it a huge success.”

The Think Pink Weekend begins on Friday, February 3rd as the women’s basketball squad faces off against the St. Francis Xavier X-Women at 6 p.m., with the men’s team taking on the X-Men at 8 p.m. The action continues on Saturday, February 4th with the women’s teams meeting again at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m. To cap off the weekend, the women’s volleyball team hosts Moncton at 7 p.m.

During the weekend, fans have the opportunity to colour coordinate with the Varsity Reds by purchasing pink mittens, pink V-Reds toques and Shoot for the Cure t-shirts in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Raffle tickets will also be sold at the Currie Center for a slew of prizes, including two baskets full of donated pink items, Think Pink and V-Reds quilts, an enormous stuffed pink pig, and two giant cookies with pink M & M’s. The V-Reds will also be selling 50/50 tickets all weekend, with one draw on Friday and two draws on Saturday.

Finally, three individuals will be changing their tresses to show their support of the CBCF. Kristen Johnson, women’s basketball athletic therapist, and Red Shirt point guard Tilly Ettinger will be cutting off their hair during the half of the men’s basketball game on Saturday and donating it to make wigs for cancer patients. Also, Speedy will be dying his hair pink if the Reds can eclipse former V-Red Amanda Sharpe’s 2011 fundraising total of $965.

“We really hope our fans will bring their wallets to purchase some raffle tickets or some of the many pink V-Reds items that we will have for sale to help raise as much money as we can for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation,” Speedy said.
