Women's Basketball are in the CIS Top 10 Rankings
The V-Reds women's basketball team also moved up one place in the CIS rankings, from sixth to fifth overall, after a pair of dominating road wins over the Memorial SeaHawks in Newfoundland last weekend. V-Reds put their 7-1 first place record on the line Friday night at 6 p.m. when they host the Saint Mary's Huskies in a 6 p.m. tipoff at the Main Gym.
The game will feature the top two scorers in the country in the Huskies' Justine Colley, averaging 24.4 points per game, and UNB rookie Claire Colborne, who scored 16 and then 14 points in the two wins in Newfoundland to drop to second in the nation with an average of 22 points per game.
UNB fifth-year post Amanda Sharpe is fourth in the AUS and sixth in the country with an average of 18.3 points per game, with fifth-year shooting guard Leah Corby seventh in the conference and among the top 20 in the country with 14.1 points per game. Leah also leads the AUS in steals, with 3.38 per game, and is fourth in assists, with 4.38 per game. Her sister Megan is the leader in that department in the AUS, with 5.25 assists per game.
Fredericton native Robbi Daley of Saint Mary's is among the AUS leaders in scoring, 14th overall, with 11.4 points per game. Cape Breton Capers are the only other AUS team to crack the top 10 national rankings, listed 10th overall.
The Varsity Reds men's squad, 4-4 on the season and running sixth in the AUS, two points back of the fifth place Huskies, host Saint Mary's at 8 p.m. Friday night. The Huskies' Joey Haywood leads the nation in scoring with 28.8 points per game. St, Francis Xavier X-Men, listed fourth overall with a 5-2 record, and the Cape Breton Capers, listed 10th, are the other AUS squads listed among the nation's top 10.
The UNB Varsity Reds women's volleyball team, which split a pair of five-set matches on home floor last weekend, host the Dalhousie Tigers Saturday night at 5 p.m. in Atlantic University Sport Women's Volleyball Conference play. V-Reds, 6-6 on the season, are tied with UdeM for second place in the AUS, four points back of the league-leading and ninth nationally ranked Saint Mary's Huskies of Halifax. Dalhousie, 5-5 on the season, are two points back.
