REDS Open AUTL Season
(BEDFORD, NS) The UNB REDS tennis team opened their Atlantic University Tennis League season with mixed results at a tournament at the Sobeys Atlantic Tennis Centre, in Bedford, NS, on the weekend (Nov. 15-17/24).
The men’s team finished the weekend with three wins, two losses and two ties, while the women recorded three ties and a loss.
The men started well on Saturday, scoring wins over Saint Mary’s and Memorial, before a loss to Dalhousie 1.
Against Dalhousie 2, UNB fought to a draw before falling to STFX.
On Sunday, the UNB men beat UPEI and tied Acadia to finish fourth, which puts them in contention for a spot in the AUTL championship tournament.
“The team won the matches we were supposed to win,” said UNB’s Eric Cimic. “We didn't do as well against the competitive schools, but managing to tie twice means that we left ourselves a good chance to finish in the top four and qualify for the championship tournament.”
The women were challenged in their opening match-up on Saturday, falling to Dal. The REDS were able to rebound with a draw against UPEI.
On Sunday, UNB earned two more ties, against STFX and Memorial, to finish sixth overall.
“The team fought really hard,” said UNB’s Jigisha Kumari. “We expected to struggle a little during this tournament as one of our best players was not able to attend. Although we didn't achieve the results we were hoping for, we’re confident that we can make it to the top four in the next tournament and qualify for the championship tournament.”
The next event on the AUTL schedule is January 10-12, once again at the Atlantic Tennis Centre, in Bedford.
