REDS Force Deciding Match
(QUEBEC CITY, QC) The UNB REDS forced a deciding game in their best of three RSEQ semi-final series with a straight sets victory over the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday night, in Quebec City.
UNB won 25-17, 25-19, and 25-20 to even the series at one win apiece.
Laval won Friday's opener, 3-2.
On Saturday, the REDS used a series of short runs to build a lead then scored four of the final five points for the 25-17 win. Mid-way through the second set, UNB fashioned a 6-0 run to go up 19-14 on route to the 25-19 win. Tied 13-13 in the third, UNB scored four straight points to go up 17-13 and then held the home team at arm's length, winning 25-20.
"It was a great team effort tonight," said REDS' head coach Dan McMorran. "That affords us an opportunity to battle again on Sunday. The group keeps improving but more importantly, keeps wanting to improve and are genuinely embracing this tough playoff series on the road."
Jacob Harris led the REDS, who dressed just seven players, with 11 kills, three aces, and four blocks.
Eduardo Luchese had eight kills and five digs, Lucac Maffia registered 16 assists and eight kills, Finn McMorran added 14 assists and six digs, and Shamus Cormier put up a game-high five blocks.
"I'm really excited about what this team can do," said Luchese. "I believe we showed a bit of that tonight, but we've got to get our heads in the right mindset and come out even stronger on Sunday. It's going to be a battle, but I'd choose no one other than these teammates to be here with and I really believe in us."
The REDS and Rouge et Or will play the deciding match on Sunday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 3:00pm Atlantic (2:00pm EST).
"We're still very aware of what we're up against on Sunday, and we're looking forward to the challenge," said Coach McMorran.
The winner will advance to face the top-seeded Sherbrooke Vert et Or in the RSEQ final.
