Winnipeg OH Headed East
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s volleyball team is adding 6’3” outside hitter Levi Johnston, of Winnipeg, to their recruiting class of 2025.
He’s signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2025-2026 RSEQ season.
The 18-year-old left side spent the 2024-2025 season at Winnipeg’s Canadian Mennonite University where he earned Manitoba Colleges Athletic Association All Conference honours.
“Levi had a terrific year in the CCAA and was a major contributor to his team’s success,” said REDS’ head coach Dan McMorran. “He’s an explosive attacker with a solid all-round game and will certainly add depth to our outside position.”
During the 24-25 season, Johnston was second in the MCAC in kills per set (2.58) and total kills (178) and was fourth in the league in service aces per set (0.46), helping CMU to a second-place finish. The Blazers were conference finalists and made the school’s first appearance at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament where they upset the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals.
“I’m highly competitive and motivated to get better on and off the court,” said Johnston. “Teammates have said that I’m a genuine, trustworthy and level-headed person that leads by example.”
Prior to his year at CMU, Johnston played high school volleyball at Winnipeg’s Transcona Collegiate and was a member of various Winman Volleyball Club teams as well as Team Manitoba in 2024.
His resume includes being named a Maple Award winner at the 2024 Canada Cup, a 2024 Volleyball Manitoba all-star, and earning a spot on the 2023-24 All-Manitoba high school team.
“The REDS’ coaching philosophy resonated with me,” said Johnston. “I believe UNB will be a great environment for me to develop as a student-athlete.”
“What is impressive is his motivation to improve and play at the next level,” said Coach McMorran. “I’m excited for him to make the journey east and continue his university career with the REDS.”
Johnston says his immediate goals include training this summer, so he’s prepared for next season.
Johnston will study Business Administration while attending UNB.
