Bourque Joining REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s volleyball team is adding libero Alex Bourque, from Dieppe, New Brunswick, to their recruiting class of 2025.
The 17-year-old, completing his Grade 12 year at École Mathieu-Martin, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2025-2026 RSEQ season.
“Alex is a solid all-round player and a top prospect in Atlantic Canada this graduating class,” said REDS’ head coach Dan McMorran. “He has excellent athletic potential to develop into an impact U SPORTS libero.”
The 5’9” Bourque has been a member of various age division teams within Moncton’s Gravitron Volleyball Club since 2021, is a former MVP with the Mathieu-Martin Matadors’ junior and senior teams, and a member of Team NB at various age group levels. He’s a former Canada Cup all-star and was recently named Volleyball New Brunswick’s male indoor volleyball athlete of the year.
“UNB has appealed to me all my life,” said Bourque. “Even as a kid, I played for a junior REDS hockey team and always wanted to go there. I’ve also heard great things about Coach McMorran and wanted to experience it for myself.”
Later this year, Bourque will compete at both the Canada Cup and Canada Summer Games.
“I believe leadership is a role I will take on later in my career,” he added. “Right now, I need to adjust to everything happening, especially since playing U SPORTS will be a big transition.”
“He’s been a leader with each team he’s played for, a quality we’re looking for and one that is integral for this next level,” said Coach McMorran. “We’re very happy he’s joining our program and look forward to him adding depth to our defensive unit.”
“My short-term goal is to adapt to the level of play as quickly as possible,” said Bourque. “My long-term goal is to become one of the best liberos in U SPORTS. I believe both these goals are achievable.”
Bourque will study Engineering while attending UNB.
