Reds Win RSEQ Season Closer
UNB straight sets winner of Dal
(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB Reds topped the Dalhousie Tigers 3-0 in the final RSEQ match of the regular season for both teams.
UNB won with scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-17.
The first set was a tight contest, with both teams trading points early. UNB led by as many as seven points before hitting the technical time out up 16-11. The Reds would continue to build their lead, thanks in part to some strong serving by Nick Glynn (Fredericton, NB), and take the first set 25-18.
Dalhousie took charge early on in the second set, and had a two-point lead heading into the technical time out. They continued to lead, but Glynn's strong serving anchored a comeback for the Reds, and they took the second set 25-21.
The Tigers were again off to a great start in the third set until a number of unforced errors, mid-way through, gave UNB the momentum they needed to cruise to a 25-17 win to take the match 3-0.
Connor McConnell (Hanwell, NB) had a team-high 14 kills and added 10 digs and two aces. Eduardo Luchese (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) also had a solid game for the Reds, earning 10 kills and player of the game honours.
Graham Schmuland (Calgary, AB) led the Tigers with 14 kills and five digs, while Ethan Boyd (Summerside, PE) added nine kills.
The Reds finish the regular season with a 5-and-11 record, and will move on to the RSEQ semi-finals next weekend. UNB will face the league's top team, the Université de Montréal Carabins.
The season is over for the Tigers, who finish with an 0-and-16 record.
