UNB Falls To Vert et Or
Sherbrooke scores first win of season
(FREDERICTON, NB) l'Universite de Sherbrooke Vert et Or scored their first win of the season, beating the UNB Varsity Reds 3-1 in AUS/RSEQ interlock play, on Saturday afternoon, in Fredericton.
The Vert et Or won with scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-21 and 25-19.
Sherbrooke built a 20-14 first set lead before UNB cut that to 21-20.
In the second set, the Varsity Reds led 16-12 at the technical time-out on route to their 25-18 win to knot the match at a set apiece.
The third set was close, with the Vert et Or leading 16-15 at the time-out, before outscoring UNB 9-6 down the stretch.
In the fourth, Sherbrooke established a 19-13 lead before pulling away to their 25-19 win.
"It feels really good. It's about time," said Sherbrooke's Laurent Duval-Demers(Candiac, QC), named the Vert et Or's Subway Player of the Match. "We went to Tunisia during Christmas, so there was some build-up then and everyone is doing their job. It's clear, it was a pretty good trip for us."
Duval-Demers led Sherbrooke with 23 kills.
As excited as the Vert et Or were about the win, the Varsity Reds were disappointed with the loss.
"We came out trying to win," said Nick Glynn(Fredericton, NB). "We played an okay game, I guess. We could've done some stuff better. We battled hard, but we're hoping for a better result tonight."
"We just didn't execute," said Glynn, named the Subway Player of the Match for the Varsity Reds. "We hit a lot of balls that didn't find the floor as much as we needed to."
Connor McConnell(Hanwell, NB) led the UNB effort. He had 14 kills.
Kent Doucette(Tignish, PE) had 16 digs.
UNB's loss came less than 24 hours after the Varsity Reds took the U SPORTS No. 7 ranked Montreal Carabins to five sets.
"Obviously, there was a little bit of a let-down," said Glynn. "But that's a good team on the other side. We didn't get the result we wanted today."
The Vert et Or wraps its interlock weekend with a 1-1 record.
The Varsity Reds will play one more match, against Laval. First serve is scheduled for 7:30pm.
