Huskies Over VReds In Five Set Match
Saskatchewan rallies from down 2-1.
(FREDERICTON, NB) The University of Saskatchewan Huskies completed a pre-season sweep of the UNB Varsity Reds with a 3-2 victory Thursday night, at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The Huskies rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat UNB 25-22, 21-25, 16-25, 31-29 and 15-9.
Connor Murray(Prince Albert, SK) led the Huskies with 15 kills and 9 digs.
Daulton Sinoski((Prince Albert, SK) registered 11 kills.
Connor McConnell(Hanwell, NB) had a match-high 21 kills for the Varsity Reds, while Drew Duncan(Winnipeg, MB) had 14 digs.
The Huskies' Murray and UNB's Herbert Compagner(Island View, NB) were named Subway Players of the Game.
"I think they blocked really well tonight," said Murray, of the Varsity Reds. "They served well, they put us in trouble on our serve-receive. That's just a good team over there."
The Varsity Reds had three match points in the fourth set, but could not tame the Huskies.
Murray feels that was a turning point.
"It built confidence, I think, knowing we could battle through tough situations like that," he said.
"It was a lot closer than last night," said Compagner. "Obviously, it's unfortunate that we didn't pull through."
"We put a lot more pressure on them with our serves and missed less serves and we were also more crisp in our execution, didn't make as many errors," he said.
On Wednesday, Saskatchewan beat UNB 3-1.
The Huskies continue their eastern Canadian swing on Friday, in Halifax, when they take on the Dalhousie Tigers.
The Varsity Reds now prepare for their regular season opener, October 27th, when they meet Montreal, in AUS-RSEQ interlock play, in Halifax.
