Saskatchewan takes 3-1 exhibition victory
(FREDERICTON, NB) West beat east in exhibition U SPORTS volleyball, in Fredericton on Wednesday.
The University of Saskatchewan Huskies beat the UNB Varsity Reds 3-1, with scores of 25-18, 25-15, 24-26 and 27-25.
Fourth year outside hitter Colin Fraser(Saskatoon, SK) led the Huskies effort with 11 kills and 8 digs.
Connor McConnell(Hanwell, NB) led the Varsity Reds with 11 kills and 5 service aces, while Alex Egers(Fredericton, NB) registered a match high 16 digs.
McConnell says, while they didn't get the result they wanted, the Varsity Reds were excited to play after a couple weeks of training and practice.
"It's good to see where the process has gotten you," he said. "All those hours in the gym, it's good to apply it here and do pretty well."
McConnell was named the Varsity Reds' Subway Player of the Game.
Matthew Meyer(Prince Albert, SK) earned that honour for the Huskies.
"We need to reduce our unforced errors," said McConnell. "We've got a bunch of talent on the court, we just need to know how to use it."
Fraser believes the Huskies can be better.
"I think we can clean up our own side," he said. "Handling serves and passing, I think, is something we can improve on, but overall, we're happy with this first match."
The Varsity Reds and Huskies meet again Thursday night, at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
First serve is scheduled for 7:00pm.
Thursday's game was originally scheduled to take place in the Lady Beaverbrook Gym, but has been moved to the Currie Center.
