The UNB Varsity Reds men's volleyball team is pleased to announce the signing of two standout recruits to Letter of Intents for the upcoming 2015-16 season.
Simon Davis-Power is a 6'4" outside hitter, from Conception Bay South, NL, and first caught Coach McMorran's eye this past summer at the Eastern Elite Championships in Moncton, NB. As a member of Team Newfoundland, Simon led all attackers at the tournament, was an integral part to his team capturing the gold, and was named tournament MVP.
"I am extremely proud and excited to be joining the Varsity Reds this September", says Davis-Power. "It has always been a dream of mine to play on one of the top teams in Canada, and I feel that by attending such a high academic and athletic university I will be able to achieve those dreams over the next five years, improving my game under the guidance and expertise of Coach McMorran. I am ecstatic about putting on a Varsity Reds jersey in 2015."
"Simon is one of the most physically gifted players in this year's recruiting class across the entire country," says McMorran. "His talent and strength will help make his transition to the CIS game a more seamless one. He plays with a real passion for the game and has the potential to be an impact player in the very near future, and I am excited to welcome Simon to our Varsity Reds program."
François Pitre-Pelletier is a 6'11" middle/outside, from Balmoral, NB. He's been a member of Team NB the past two years, and this summer had a strong showing as a member of New Brunswick's NTCC team, finishing 4th in Gatineau, QC, at the National Team Challenge Cup. This season François played club for VNE's 18U team and although they lost in the finals to MAE Volleyball, he will be joining forces with them and attending the Volleyball Canada Nationals in Calgary, AB this May.
"I'm very excited to be joining the UNB volleyball team next year," says Pitre-Pelletier. "I always wanted to play on a university volleyball team, and I am glad that this team will be the Varsity Reds. Coach McMorran invested a tremendous amount of time with me during the past few years and the atmosphere in which the team made me feel, and playing on the NTCC team with a couple of them last summer all contributed to my final decision. I am very excited to be playing with the boys next September!"
"I am very excited to have François join our program this coming September," says McMorran. "I've been following his progress for three years now, and have been pleased with his development. His kind of size doesn't come along everyday, but he also has great athleticism to compliment his towering stature. He has had experience playing both the middle and outside positions, which will make him a very versatile and dangerous player for us."
"With Simon and François we not only are gaining two excellent athletes, but two top-level students as well," continues McMorran. "We expect that these young men will help us compete for a CIS title while performing at an exceptionally high level in the classroom and the community."
The Varsity Reds next see action on January 2 and 3, as they host the Université de Sherbrooke in two exhibition matches at the RJCC. Game times are 7pm and 8pm respectively.
