V-Reds men's volleyball ends the weekend with a win
November 4, 2012
Today’s game was game two of two as the men’s volleyball team took on the MUN Sea Hawks.
The first set was a battle from the first serve, going point for point, with powerful kills from Marc White, Craig Toonders, and Logan Keoughan kept the V-Reds a close point behind, or a nerve testing point ahead for the majority of the set. Some powerful ace serves from Matt Sweet, made winning the set in the sights of the V-Reds, bringing the score to 24-24. UNB’s tenacity continued as they took the first set 29-27.
In the second set, compared to yesterday’s match, UNB’s serving had improved, allowing for a few nice ace serves from Mathieu Losier, setter once again in today’s game, maintaining his tenacity from yesterday. The V-Reds moved the ball very well in today’s game, keeping the Sea Hawks on their toes, diving for the kills from Elvind Anderson, and keeping them from sending them back over with towering blocks from Craig Toonders, and Mathieu Losier. The V-Reds took the set 25-14.
Coach McMorran mentions that, “We (V-Reds) started three new guys today, two new middle blockers and a new Libero, there were still some nerves starting out today, but we battled hard and made the comeback,” Throughout the third set, momentum rose, with some power coming from Marc White, and Matt Sweet both in serves and Kills. Also, keeping the V-Reds on top throughout the set was Elvind Anderson with numerous deep digs, keeping away points from the Sea Hawks, taking the final set 25-20, ending the game in three sets for UNB.
The V-Reds women’s team also battled MUN; it was a fierce battle, with four sets, scores respectively 25-21 MUN, 25-21 UNB, 25-22 MUN, and the fourth and final set, 25-18, leaving Memorial with the win.
The V-Reds can be caught in action again next weekend, the men with a two game weekend against Dalhousie in Halifax the 9th and 10th, and the women against Acadia the 9th in Wolfville and on the 10th in Halifax against Dalhousie.
