UNB Varsity Reds defeat Manitoba Bisons in three straight sets

The UNB Varsity Reds reached new heights on Saturday afternoon, out blocking the Manitoba Bisons 9 to 4.5 and defeating them in three straight sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-20) in the second of a two-game series in men’s volleyball action today at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER.
Second year setter Luke Herr of Winnipeg was named player of the match for the Bisons with 11 assists and two digs to his credit.
First year setter Mathieu Losier of Fredericton was named player of the match for the Varsity Reds with 33 assists and four service aces.
“It’s very important for us to have another reliable setter on the team and I’m very pleased with the way Losier played today,” commented head coach Dan McMorran.
Outside hitter Julio Fernandez of Venezuela, a leader on the V-Reds, posted an outstanding thirteen kills with zero errors with an attack percentage of .650 and four digs.
Norwegian newcomer Elvind Anderson had another great game in only his second start for UNB, posting eight kills, two service aces and two digs.
While the Varsity Reds lost to the Bisons two sets to three in yesterday’s match-up, “Today our guys came out with a great deal of confidence and poise,” said McMorran. “Yesterday, Manitoba was fresh off a long flight and they were tired but we knew they’d play tough - but today was a new day and we came out strong and the guy’s played well right from the get - go.”
The Varsity Reds will continue their exhibition play with a couple of matches in PEI before heading to Montreal for the QSSF-AUS interlock series where they meet Sherbrooke in their first match on October 26th.
