Varsity Reds take game 1 of 3 in Playoff Series
February 15, 2013
The UNB Varsity Reds defeated the Dalhousie Tigers tonight at Dalhousie to take game one in the best of three series against the Tigers in the Subway AUS Men’s Volleyball Championship.
The Varsity Reds lost a tight first set to the Tigers 23-25 but put that aside and pushed through to take the next three and on to a 3-1 win. Set scores finished at 23-25 25-22 25-17, 25-23.
In the second frame, UNB quickly took the lead and remained in possession throughout the set as Mathieu Losier distributed the ball well as the big guys up front, Julio Fernandez, Craig Toonders and Marc White, had three kills apiece.
In the third set Dal took the first point but it was the only time Dal would be in the lead as Fernandez scored with a Kill and the Varsity Reds never looked back. White posted four kills and two service aces to push the score to 25-17.
In the fourth and final set of the match and as the Tigers were up 8-5 coach McMorran called a time out to settle his team and again a strategic time out as his team were up 23-22.
The V-Reds went back on the floor and UNB’s player of the game Fernandez posted a big kill on a set from Mathieu Losier. Dal returned the favour to bring them within one but outside hitter White posted the deciding point with his final kill of the night; score 25-23.
Both teams will be back in action for game two of the series on Sunday (17th) night at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER on the UNB campus – game time is 7:00 pm.
The winning team from the series will attend the CIS Championship March 1-3 at Laval University.
