Fourth for UNB men's volleyball

The UNB Varsity Reds finished off the eight-team "Coast-to-Coast" men's volleyball tournament in fourth place, after a 3-0 loss to the Calgary Dinos in Sunday's bronze medal game at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. Calgary won 25-20, 25-21, 25-22.

Fourth-year setter Andrew Costa received the player of the game award for UNB, while fifth-year setter Jay Blankenau took home the honours for Calgary. The V-Reds gave the 2009-10 CIS national champions and last year's silver medallists a good battle, forcing the Dinos to have to regroup late in each set. The third was a bit of a heartbreaker for the V-Reds, however, as they jumped out to leads of 8-3 and 16-11 before allowing the Dinos to tie it at 16-16.

The Dinos would take a 24-18 lead late, but UNB would storm back to 22-24 with aggressive serving and solid blocking. On the next play, Calgary would get a break as UNB's Brett LeDrew narrowly missed another block, giving the Dinos the match. V-Reds outside hitter Julio Fernandez led all attackers with 14 kills. The tournament all-star had 12 kills in Saturday's 25-18, 25-14, 25-22 semifinal loss to the Alberta Golden Bears, who beat UBC in the final.
