Coast to Coast Semi-Final

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 15, 2011) - The Alberta Golden Bears defeated the UNB Varsity Reds in a 3-0 straight set victory. Set scores were 25-18, 25-14 and 25-22.

Jarron Mueller of Calgary was named player of the game for the Golden Bears while Julio Fernandez of Los Teques, Venezuela was the player of the match for the Varsity Reds. Mueller was the key playmaker on the Alberta offence as he had a team high 27 assists for the Golden Bears.

He was also a timely attacker with three kills on three attacks.

Fernandez was the Varsity Reds top attacking option as he had a team high 12 kills with a .320 kill percentage. He also added six digs and a block on defence.

The Golden Bears jumped out to leads in each of the first two sets, with the Varsity Reds struggling to find some consistency on offensive.  UNB made a strong effort in the third, as they found a rhythm and caused the strong Alberta block some difficulty, but ultimately couldn't hold on to force a fourth, falling in straight sets.

With the win Alberta will take on UBC in Sunday's gold medal game at 1:00pm on Sunday while the Varsity Reds will play the Calgary Dinos for bronze in the 11:00am match.

COACH'S COMMENTS

"We came up against a very good Alberta team tonight.  At this stage of the season, we are still making too many unforced errors and when you play against this caliber of competition you can't do that and get away with it.  We are looking forward to battling for the bronze medal against Calgary, as this will be another quality match for us."
