V-Reds volley to first place

The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds beat the Dalhousie Tigers 3-1 in Halifax last night to move into first place in the Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball conference.

Set scores were 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-17. UNB improves to 4-1 heading into today's match against the 3-1 Saint Mary's Huskies, also in Halifax.

Jill Blanchard (Saint John, NB) had 19 kills and 14 digs for the V-Reds while Amanda Bakker (Winnipeg, MB) helped out with 41 assists and nine digs.Erica Hay (Sussex, NB) and Emma Hunt (Whitby, ON) added nine and eight kills, respectively.

Louise Facca led Dal with 13 kills and a dozen digs. Lauren Smith added 18 digs.

In the men's match, the Tigers outlasted the V-Reds 3-2. Set scores were 26-24, 23-25, 19-25, 25-18, 16-14. Sander Ratsep led Dal with 17 kills and four digs while Angus Rhuland had 41 assists and 10 digs. Graeme Higgins added 13 kills and eight digs.

Julio Fernandez (Los Teques, Venezuela) countered with 16 kills and eight digs for UNB. Matt Sweet (O'Leary, PEI) chipped in with 12 kills and eight digs and UNB player of the match John Sheehan (New Maryland, NB) had 13 kills.
