REDS Shine In Ottawa
(OTTAWA, ON) The UNB REDS track and field teams are celebrating successful split squad efforts at meets in Ottawa and Edmonton last weekend.
In the nation’s capital, at a meet hosted by the University of Ottawa, REDS student-athletes won four gold medals.
Jared Howse won the men’s 1500-metres in a time of 3:51.38 and teammate Silas Conlin-Morse was third, less than a second back.
In the women’s 1500, Sierra Rodrigues ran second, a half second back of the winner, and Georgia Bernhard was sixth.
Lexie Shannon won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 11.68 metres. Haley Angus was second. She covered 11.26 metres.
Christopher Grant won the men’s weight throw with a heave of 15.45 metres and teammate Owen Minihan was second.
UNB established a new school record in the women’s 4-by-800-metre relay, winning in a time of 9:18.14, beating second place Queen’s by more than five seconds.
The UNB men won their 4-by-800 in a of 7:36.67. UNB men also took second in the men’s 4-by-400-metre relay and third in the 4-by-200-metre relay.
UNB’s Shelby MacIsaac scored a pair of podium finishes, running to second place in the women’s 300-metres, just ahead of teammate Anna Somers, and third in the 1000-metres. MacIsaac’s time of 2:51.75 over 1000-metres is a new UNB record in the event.
The REDS’ Ashley Morrow was second in the women’s weight throw and third in the women’s shot put, and Hannah Barnard took second in the women’s high jump.
In a field of 19, UNB’s Hayden McKinnon finished third in the men’s 600-metres.
Ivy Bialowas and Georgia Bernhard ran to fourth and fifth place respectively in the women’s 3000-metres.
A small contingent of REDS was in Edmonton for a meet hosted by the University of Alberta.
UNB’s Oliver Arnfast finished fifth in the men’s heptathlon, coming within 14 points of the REDS’ current record in the event.
Tony Jeong registered 10th and 12th place finishes in the men’s shot put and weight throw.
“It was a solid weekend for both our women’s and men’s groups,” said REDS’ head coach Chris Belof. “There is still lots of work to do, but this is a good step in our preparation for the AUS and U SPORTS championships later in the season.”
The next event on the UNB track and field schedule is the REDS Invitational, January 31st and February 1st, at the Irving Oil Field House in Saint John.
