Transfers Bolster REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s and women’s track and field team is naming a pair of transfers to their recruiting class of 2023.
Zach Wilson, silver medallist in the men’s 60-metres at the 2023 Atlantic University Sport Championships, and distance runner Megan Koski will join the REDS ahead of the 2023-2024 AUS season.
“Having Zach and Megan’s experience and talent joining our ever-growing team will be great additions to the REDS,” said Chris Belof, head coach of UNB’s track & field and cross country teams. “Their experience as leaders on their former teams will benefit our younger athletes.”
Wilson, from Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, joins the REDS with an already-impressive dossier, having run for the UPEI Panthers.
He was UPEI’s men’s track and field athlete of the year in 2022 and 2023 after earning the team’s rookie of the year award in 2020.
Along with his 60-metre silver, Wilson also helped UPEI to a bronze medal in the men’s 4-by-200 relay ath the 2023 Atlantic conference championships.
At the 2022 AUS Championships, he took the bronze medal in the 60-metres.
“Having three AUS seasons under my belt already, I hope to bring some veteran experience to the roster,” said Wilson. “I understand the difficulties in balancing schoolwork and sports, as well as the ups and downs that come with a long indoor track and field season, so I hope to be there for all of my teammates for whatever they need.”
In addition to his on-track successes this past season, Wilson was named UPEI’s Gordon and Muriel Bennett Award winner as the student-athlete that best exemplifies academic and athletic achievement.
Koski, from Hillsdale, Ontario, comes from the University of Windsor, where she competed for the Lancers between 2018 and 2022.
An Academic All-Canadian in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, Koski was the captain of the women’s cross country team in 2022 and received the team’s Gary Malloy Perseverance Award in 2021.
“I really like the family culture that the REDS have built,” said Koski. “The coaches have been working on building up the women’s team and I am very excited to be a part of this development.”
“The REDS cross country and distance track has a young group of women. I hope to share my knowledge and experience at the OUA and U SPORTS level with them. I will lead by example through motivation and determination to succeed.”
Wilson, 22, will enroll in his firsr year of Law school in the fall while Koski, 23, will pursue an Education degree.
“Both Megan and Zach are coming from reputable university programs,” said Coach Belof. “We couldn’t be more excited for them to don the red and black this year.”
