Howse Double-Bronzed At U SPORTS Championships
(WINNIPEG, MB) Jared Howse had a double bronze medal day Friday, leading the UNB REDS at the 2024 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg.
Early in the day, Howse grabbed the bronze medal in the men’s 1000-metres.
The Atlantic University Sport champion covered the distance in 2:22.99, finishing just 67/100ths of a second back of Regina’s Jonathan Podbielski.
Guelph’s Max Davies won the race in U SPORTS record time.
Later in the day, Howse anchored UNB’s bronze medal performance in the men’s 4-by-800-metre relay.
Guelph took gold, battling with top three seeds Regina and Manitoba and the REDS throughout the race.
On the anchor leg, Howse, who teamed with Ben Perrett, William Boyle, and Mitchell Kean, displayed elite speed in an incredibly fast final push.
Guelph was originally disqualified after an order violation in the handoff of the baton on the final lap, but the decision was reversed.
After two days of competition, the UNB men are tied with Montreal for 12th place in the overall standings.
In the men’s indoor heptathlon, UNB’s Oliver Arnfast finished 10th.
In the preliminaries for the women’s 300-metres, AUS champion Shelby MacIsaac ran a strong 40.49 seconds, but did not qualify for the final.
Competition concludes on Saturday.
