Howse Leads REDS On Day 1 Of AUS Championships
(MONCTON, NB) The UNB REDS sit second in the women’s and men’s team standings after the opening day of competition at the 2024 Atlantic University Sport Track & Field Championships, in Moncton.
Gold medal performances by UNB’s Shelby MacIsaac and Jared Howse were the highlites of Day One for the REDS.
“We had ups and downs, but overall it was a solid day,” said Chris Belof, head coach of the REDS.
MacIsaac set the early tone, winning the women’s 300-metres in a time of 41.04 seconds, beating teammate Jillian Langille by 4/10ths of a second.
“The 300 felt good,” said MacIsaac. “Having Jill in the lane beside me pushed me in the race. My start wasn’t great, but I made up a lot of ground in the second half. Not a perfect race, but I was happy to get the job done.”
MacIsaac later earned a bronze medal in the women’s 60-metre hurdles.
Howse won the men’s 1000-metres in a time of 2:28.60.
“It was a bit of a slower race, but I waited and kicked at the end to secure the win,” said Howse.
Howse added a second gold medal to his Day One haul as a member of UNB’s 4-by-800-metre relay team. He combined with Ben Perrett, William Boyle, and Mitchell Kean to win by more than 12 seconds.
“It was great to see our men’s 4-by-8 come out on top,” said Belof.
“I’m super proud of the team,” said Howse. “We’re looking forward to going for a medal at the U SPORTS Championships, in Manitoba.”
UNB’s women’s 4-by-800 team of Hilary Bishop, Sierra Rodrigues, Ava Goncalves, and Emily Doucet earned a bronze medal.
Boyle added a silver medal in the men’s 3000-metres while Cameron Davis and Oliver Arnfast finished second and third in the men’s pole vault.
Arnfast was also second in the men’s heptathlon.
UNB’s Haley Angus was second in the women’s triple jump.
“We’ll look to build on these efforts as we head into Day Two,” said Coach Belof.
Saturday marks the final day of competition. Action is scheduled to begin at 9:00am.
