(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s track and field and cross country teams are naming Hantsport, Nova Scotia distance runner Brett King to their recruiting class of 2023.

King has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2023-2024 Atlantic University Sport season.

“Brett is a huge talent that joins us from a strong club and school program in Nova Scotia,” said Chris Belof, head coach of UNB’s track and field and cross country teams. “Brett adds a level of competitiveness and toughness that we don’t often see from high school athletes,” he added.

“After visiting Fredericton, everything about the program felt it was the right fit,” said King. “I am super excited to work with the great coaching staff and to become part of an outstanding group of teammates”.

The 17-year-old is finishing his Grade 12 year at Horton High School, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Over the last several years, King has amassed four individual provincial cross country titles, three provincial cross country team titles, was the 2021 provincial champion in the 1500m, and a three-time silver medalist at the Nova Scotia provincials. King also finished 9th in the 1500m at the 2022 Legion National Youth Championships.

“I strive on race day and believe that competitiveness is my number one asset,” said King. “I look at myself as a leader and hope to be a leader on the team in my later years as a RED.”

“Brett has demonstrated that he can compete and have success both at the provincial, regional and national level. We expect Brett to contribute to our men’s cross country and distance group immediately,” said Coach Belof. “I’m excited to work with Brett here at UNB, and see him grow into a leader with our men’s program as he takes the next steps in his athletic and academic career. Brett will play a major role in our AUS and U SPORTS groups in the coming years.”

King says his short-term goal with the REDS is to step into a quickly growing winning culture and help contribute to an AUS Championship. Long-term, he wants to help build that winning culture and chase a U SPORTS Championship.

King will study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
