Manuel Leads Reds At U SPORTS Championships

(WINNIPEG, MB) The UNB Reds track and field team posted numerous personal bests during the recent U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, at the University of Manitoba.

The Reds sent five student-athletes to Winnipeg, with Lexie Shannon leading the contingent with her 7^th place finish in the women’s triple jump.

Shannon covered 11.60 metres, while teammate Victoria LeBlanc posted a personal best, going 11.56 metres to finish 9^th.

In the women’s long jump, Erin McCavour leapt 5.31 metres, taking 12^th place. She had been ranked 14^th going into the event.

On the men’s side of the competition, Jarod Manuel took 7^th in the men’s shot put, with a put of 15.23 metres.

Manuel was 8^th in the men’s weight throw, at 16.49 metres. That established a new personal best, by more than a metre, and a new UNB record. Manuel had been ranked 11^th going into the event.

In the men’s long jump, Brandon Cleghorn was 13^th, with a leap of 6.39 metres. He finished 13^th in the men’s high jump, clearing 1.85 metres.

Despite the limited numbers, the women’s ‘team’ finished 20^th overall, while the men placed 22^nd.

“It was a good weekend, overall,” said Reds head coach Chris Belof. “We had strong performances from Lexie and Jarod to score points at the national championships. At this level, we certainly have a long way to go, but these performances, along with the progress this season, is very encouraging for the future of the Reds Track and Field program.”
