With 2015 shaping up to be the most competitive men's team since the revival of the program the 2015 McGill Team Challenge was very successful. More than 20 universities from across Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada took part in the competition with 19 schools scoring team points. UNB finished in 11th place with 18.25 points.
The highest finisher for the team was Jordan Johnson who tied for third place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.93m. Jordan's jump currently ranks him tied for #3 in the AUS with teammate Kyle Lefort and #20 in the CIS.
Kyle Lefort was sixth in the pentathlon (60m hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump, 1000m) with a score of 3181pts, which broke his own school record in the event. During Lefort's pentathlon he also broke his own 60m hurdle record 9.21s, and came very close to the school's high jump record (1.95m) clearing a new personal best of 1.93m. Lefort currently ranks #1 in the AUS in the Pentathlon (#21 in the CIS), tied for #3 in the AUS with teammate Jordan Johnson in the high jump (#20 in the CIS).
Next up for the V-Reds was Brandon Cleghorn who jumped 6.45m in the long jump to set a new school record and finish in seventh place and #3 in the AUS. Daniel Brown finished eighth in the 600m and 13th in the 300m. Both times were new UNB school records and move Brown into #2 in the AUS for both events. Kyle Ancheta was eighth in the triple jump with a best jump of 12.81m, another school record, and #4 in the AUS. Continuing to flirt with the school record (7.12s) in the 60m was Artabaz Nazari who got two chances in the 60m running 7.14s and 7.13s finishing in 13th place overall and #4 in the AUS.
Other school records were set by Luke Dillman in the shot put throwing 12.60m (#3 in the AUS) and the 4x400m team of Mike Whitcomb, Dan Brown, Jeff Retallick, and Jonathan Bunn which is now #2 in the AUS.
"The McGill Team Challenge is one of the toughest university meets in the country and our team performed admirably. The results continue to put a lot of pressure on our AUS competitors and show that we will be ready for our conference championships," said head coach Jason Reindl.
The team now takes a week off from competition as they recover and prepare for the NB Indoor Championships being held in Oromocto on February 7. This will be their last competition before the conference championships being held in Moncton on February 28-March 1.
