(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s swimming team is adding one of the top 17-year-old swimmers in New Brunswick to their recruiting class of 2023.

Maxime Kenny, of Losier Settlement, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join the REDS ahead of the 2023-2024 Atlantic University Sport season.

“Maxime is just the type of student-athlete we want in our program,” said REDS’ head coach Marta Belsh. “He’s a proven performer in the pool and he’s a good student. He’ll make an impact immediately with our group,” she added.

Currently finishing his Grade 12 year at Polyvalent W. Arthur Losier, in Tracadie-Sheila, Kenny is the top 17-year-old in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and ranked second in the 100m butterfly.

“The REDS have a great bond and competitive mind, and I love that,” said Kenny. “I’m looking forward to learning from their experience and I’m excited to become a better athlete and student.”

A veteran member of Team NB, Kenny has also competed with L’Equipe de Natation Shippagan and with his high school team.

At the 2022 New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletics Association championships, Kenny won the senior boys 100m butterfly and 100m individual medley, finished second in the 100m breaststroke by less than 3/10ths of a second and was third in the 50m butterfly where the top three finishers were separated by 44/100ths of a second.

Kenny topped the 15 and over boys category at the 2023 New Brunswick Open Cup and was among the top eight in the 14 and over boys class at the 2022 Coupe Atlantique.

“I look forward to qualifying for the U SPORTS Championships and becoming a better athlete with the help of my new coach and teammates,” said Kenny.

“We’re lucky to have Maxime joining us,” said Coach Belsh. “He’s homegrown talent and we’re excited to see what he can do as a RED.”

Kenny will pursue a Bachelor of Science in Engineering while attending UNB.
